BALANCED MIND IN A BALANCED BODY
Discover Your Strengths
WHAT IS PILATES?
Developed by Joseph Pilates, Pilates is a form of exercise which emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility and awareness in order to support efficient, graceful movement. Pilates is designed to strengthen, balance and stretch the body without adding bulk or stressing the joints.

Pilates is one of the most popular exercise systems in the country. Indeed, one of the best things about the Pilates method is that it works so well for a wide range of people. Athletes and dancers love it, and it is welcomed by seniors, people who are at various stages of rehabilitation, and it is also excellent for pre and post natal women.

The top benefits of Pilates exercise that people report are that they become stronger, longer, leaner and are more able to do anything with grace and ease.

Pilates is an adaptable method. Modification is easy which makes it so successful for so many people. All the exercises are developed with modifications that can make a workout safe and challenging for a person at any level.

The Pilates method emphasizes quality over quantity. Unlike many systems of exercise, Pilates does not include a lot of repetitions of each move. Pilates relies more on precision of form, and yields significant results in a shorter time than one might imagine.

A unique feature of Strength and Movement is the ability to teach Movement. Movement Education is fundamental in all aspects of our daily lives. Proper movement is useful, and essential for everyone.
CHERYL BURNEY
Strong Foundations
With an extensive background in Anatomy and Physiology, Cheryl soon discovered that she wanted to help people feel better.
After being certified for Swedish Massage, Cheryl went on to learn Structural Integration (a painless form of Rolfing) coupled with Movement Education. It was this intensive background and training that qualified her to train as a Pilates instructor, in 2004.
Combining the latest thinking in Anatomy, Physiology, Swedish Massage, Structural Integration and Movement with Pilates has enabled Cheryl to not only heal her own injuries, it has taught her some invaluable lessons which she brings to her Strength and Movement work, creating Pilates with Purpose.
Cheryl has used Pilates not only to heal her own and others injuries, but to help others feel better than when they arrived and to carry that feeling home. She says, “The most important thing I can do for my clients is to educate them, not only with their form during a class, but how to take that form and function and apply it to their daily lives."
Pilates is not a single-minded practice. At her studio in Mill Valley, some clients seek intense training for job performance while others require help with rehabilitation. Clients who arrive with one goal in mind often leave with a better sense of balance, increased flexibility and a grace that permeates all movement. Yet all appreciate the studio’s calm and friendly environment. While Cheryl loves working with people with all different sorts of goals, her focus in on the Active Aging community.
"Pilates never ceases to amaze me in what it can do for people all around,” Cheryl concludes. “Everyone gets to reap the benefits of the results of Pilates classes!”
The best thing? Watching people walk out the door feeling better and looking happier than when they arrived. That feeling of satisfaction can't be beat.

Hear What They’re Saying
I am an avid runner and when I fractured my Patella for the second time in two years, I knew I had to start taking better care of my body. I came to Cheryl in a full leg, locked brace and rather than looking at me like I was crazy, she embraced my situation and worked with me. When I finally was able to take my brace off and try my first run, I had a blissful 30 minute run and I owe that entirely to Cheryl. Anyone who can be creative and keep a runner such as myself as strong as she did has my loyalty. I have continued to work with Cheryl and I have been running pain free for years because of her knowledge and ability to create workouts that suit my individual needs. I couldn't recommend a better Pilates instructor.
Megan, Kentfield
I have enjoyed working with Cheryl for the past 12 years. I am very pleased with my progress in balance, strength and overall well-being. Cheryl has a wonderful sense of humor in addition to her training skills. Pilates is a part of my long term goal to keep fit and healthy. I never hesitate to recommend her to everyone who wants to feel more vital.
Oveda, Ross
I started working with Cheryl about 6 months before my wedding and really wanted to get toned up for the big day. Cheryl was amazing to work with and focused on all the areas necessary for spending all day in a wedding dress and the next couple weeks honeymooning in a bikini! The workouts were never the same and she always remembered my favorite moves. I was seeing results and feeling stronger within a month. Cheryl not only got me into great shape, she also helped with my confidence along the way. I would have never been able to walk down the aisle feeling that good without my experience at Strength and Movement Pilates.

I first started working with Cheryl after my doctor suggested working with a trainer to strengthen my abdominal and back muscles to reduce my chronic back pain. Within a few weeks I found that by focusing on my core muscles, I was able to completely eliminate my back pain, and have seen remarkable improvements in my core muscle and upper body strength. A short time later I was offered a job in federal law enforcement, and prior to leaving for my training, Cheryl enabled me to double the physical fitness scores I had seven years ago in local law enforcement training. I would recommend Cheryl to anyone.
